Powder River’s Appalachian Trail Journey from Georgia to Maine 2008

Trailhead

april-1

Location: Amicalola Falls State Park Shelter (Max Epperson Shelter)
Miles hiked today: 0
Miles from Springer -8.8
Miles from Katahdin 2,184.2
Elevation: 1,700 ft
Temperature: 68 degrees

I am finally here! Last night we arrived late to the Atlanta area and stayed with some good friend’s of Mogo’s. This entire trip down here this weekend has been such an amazing and special time for us. It was really tough saying goodbye. We got to the Amicalola Falls parking lot around sundown, so I only made it as far as the shelter a hundred feet up the trail.

No worries though, as tomorrow is really the first day’s hike. Maybe there was something to that April fools thing after all, since I didn’t really hike today! Its just as well too as it is 8 miles or so up to Springer, and THEN the Appalachian Trail starts. So essentially after the end of tomorrow I will be at mile 0. There are some really beautiful falls here that would be nice to see in the daytime, too. The weather was absolutely gorgeous this evening. It was rainy this morning but it cleared up and spring has already come here in Georgia.

Please pray for me and all of the miles and trials ahead!

The thru-hike is not measured so much in miles as it is in its ability to transform arrogance into humilty, impatience into grace, and weariness into fortitude. Or of course, you can measure it by all the cheeseburgers you will consume from town to town…

Wish I’d kept a tally of them on my thru-hike :0)

No small wonder I gained 20 lbs on my way north whatwith all them there burgers. Ahh, the joys of the female metabolism. Don’t worry, you guys on average drop 20-30lbs on a 2,000 mile jaunt. Maybe growing a really really big beard will balance that out. Scary.
